How to onboard applicators to your app

Tile applicators and waterproofing contractors are scattered across sites, work in gangs, and change products from job to job depending on what the contractor or dealer provides. Many have never used a brand app. Onboarding them depends on reaching them where products change hands, showing them the product working, and paying the first reward before the day is over.

Applicators are onboarded best at tile, paint and hardware counters, at site demonstrations and at applicator meets, with a one-step WhatsApp sign-up and the first reward paid by UPI on the first scan. Product demonstrations are the strongest hook in this category, because applicators adopt tile adhesives, epoxy grouts and waterproofing systems once they have seen them work.

Keep the three applicator types separate from the start. A tile applicator, a carpenter and a waterproofing contractor need different products, messages and rewards, even in one program.

Demonstration is the hook

An applicator used to cement mortar or cement grout will not switch because of a reward. He switches when he sees the adhesive hold a large tile, the epoxy grout stay clean, or the coating seal a terrace. Plan demonstrations at sites, dealer premises and meets, enrol attendees on the spot with a first scan on a demo pack, and add a bonus on their first jobs with the demonstrated product. See how to run influencer meets.

One-step sign-up

  1. The applicator scans a code on a pack or counter standee; WhatsApp opens with a pre-filled message.
  2. His mobile number becomes his account. A voice note in his language explains what each product earns.
  3. He gives his name, town and applicator type.
  4. The first scan pays immediately. UPI is collected at the first payout; PAN only when earnings approach the level where TDS may apply, as your tax advisor confirms.

Many applicators read little and work with phones that have limited storage. Voice explanations and simple visual screens matter; see app adoption for low-literacy users.

Gang heads, helpers and contractors

Tiling is often done by a gang with a head applicator (the head mason) and helpers; waterproofing by a contractor with a small crew. Decide who scans and earns. A common rule: each person earns on his own number for packs he scans, and the gang head or contractor gets a team view and a small team bonus. For waterproofing, the contractor registers the job, which adds a job bonus and registers the homeowner's warranty. Write the rule down and explain it at sign-up. See contractor loyalty programs.

Activation in the first two weeks

  • First-scan reward paid at once, noticeably more than a normal scan.
  • First-job bonus for a set number of bags or kgs on one job, reachable quickly.
  • A call or voice message to applicators who joined but have not scanned within a week.
  • Visible next step: the next tier and the training it opens up, such as epoxy grout or a waterproofing system.

What to measure

  • Sign-ups by source and applicator type, and share active within 7 and 30 days.
  • Demo attendees using the demonstrated product within 60 days.
  • Waterproofing jobs registered per active contractor.
  • Time from sign-up to first payout.
  • Counters whose sign-ups never scan at sites.

Bring counters into onboarding

Counter staff at tile, paint and hardware shops see applicators every day and are the cheapest onboarding channel you have. Give them a standee, a short script in the local language and a small reward for each applicator they sign up who goes on to scan at a site. Paying on activation rather than on sign-up keeps counter staff from enrolling relatives or regular customers who never apply the product. Review counter sign-ups monthly, thank the counters whose applicators stay active, and drop the standee from counters whose sign-ups never scan at a site.

How Unotag helps onboard applicators

With Unotag, applicators join and scan on WhatsApp or app, each code binds to its first scan, rewards are paid by UPI or as points, warranties are registered by scan, and a voice-first assistant answers in Indian languages. Tiers, badges and meets are built in. See the influencer loyalty program and the adhesives and waterproofing page.

Key takeaways

  • Reach applicators at tile, paint and hardware counters, at site demos and at meets.
  • Use demonstrations as the main hook; reward first jobs with the demonstrated product.
  • Sign-up in one WhatsApp step, first reward on the first scan.
  • Define what gang heads, helpers and waterproofing contractors each earn.
  • Measure activation by applicator type and demo conversion, not total sign-ups.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reach tile applicators to enrol them?

At tile dealer and showroom counters when they collect material, at site demonstrations and at applicator meets, and when they scan a code on a pack.

Why are demonstrations important for applicator onboarding?

Applicators switch products when they see them work on a real job. A demo with on-the-spot sign-up and a first-job bonus brings them in and moves them to the product.

Should helpers in a tiling gang earn rewards?

Usually yes, on their own numbers for packs they scan, with the gang head getting a team view and a small team bonus.

How do waterproofing contractors use the program?

They scan packs, register each job with the site and homeowner details, earn a job bonus and register the homeowner's warranty.

Do applicators need to download an app?

No. They can join, scan and check balances on WhatsApp, including by voice in their language.

What should an applicator program measure first?

Activation within 7 and 30 days by applicator type and source, and how many demo attendees go on to use the product.
