Electronics referral programs: three loops that work
A water purifier is bought because a neighbour has one. An air conditioner brand is chosen because the installer said so. A new dealer is appointed because an existing dealer vouched for the brand. Electronics and appliances run on referrals already; a referral program pays for the ones you can verify.

An electronics referral program rewards a person for bringing the brand a verified new relationship, and in electronics and appliances there are three loops that work: a dealer referring a new dealer or counter, an installer or technician referring a customer, and a customer referring another customer. The referral is carried by a code or link issued on WhatsApp or printed as a QR, the reward is released when the referred party completes a verifiable action such as a warranty registration, a first invoice or a first scan, and fraud is controlled by tying every party to a unique phone number, serial number and geography. Across programs Unotag runs, referral rewards land between ₹100 and ₹500 per verified customer and ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 per activated dealer.
The three loops
| Loop | Who refers | Who is referred | Verified action | Reward to referrer | Reward to referred |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dealer refers dealer | Existing dealer or counter | New counter in an uncovered area | First invoice or first scanned stock of ₹25,000 or more | ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 or a launch-stock discount | Welcome scheme at higher rate for 60 days |
| Installer refers customer | AC, RO, geyser or CCTV technician | Household or small business | Warranty registration with serial number and invoice | ₹100 to ₹500 per unit by product value | Extended warranty or a free service visit |
| Customer refers customer | Registered product owner | Friend or neighbour | Purchase and warranty registration within 30 to 60 days | ₹200 to ₹1,000 or a service credit | ₹200 to ₹500 off, an accessory or a service visit |
The installer loop is the one specific to this category. The technician who fits the outdoor unit or the purifier is in the customer's home at the moment of purchase or replacement, and is asked which brand to buy next. The AC and appliance installer post covers the installer program the referral loop sits inside; the home appliances and electronics industry pages set the context.
Referral code mechanics
- Personal code on WhatsApp. Every dealer, installer and registered customer gets a short code and a share link in their chat. Forwarding it is the referral.
- QR on the unit or the warranty card. The warranty registration QR carries the installer's code when the installer scans first, so the customer's registration is attributed without either party typing anything. See QR code warranty registration.
- Attribution window. Referrals count if the verified action happens within 30 to 60 days of the code being shared or scanned. Longer windows invite disputes.
- One referrer per referred party. First valid code wins; later codes for the same phone or serial are rejected and logged.
When to pay: registration or purchase
Paying on registration is fast and encourages sharing, but it pays for leads. Paying on purchase is honest but slow, and in electronics the purchase is usually followed by a warranty registration that the brand can see. The workable middle is a split: a small amount, ₹50 to ₹100, on a verified registration of interest, and the balance when the referred party's serial number is registered under warranty against a dealer invoice. For dealer referrals, pay on the first invoice or first scanned stock above a threshold, and pay the second half after 90 days of continued activity so that a counter opened for the bonus alone does not earn it.
Fraud in referral programs
Referral programs attract self-referral, and electronics adds the serial number as both a risk and a control.
| Pattern | What it looks like | Control |
|---|---|---|
| Self-referral | Installer registers his own purchase under a second number | Phone, PAN or Aadhaar-linked KYC per member; device and address matching |
| Duplicate phones | Same number appears as referred customer across several referrers | One referred phone earns once, across the program's life |
| Serial reuse | Same serial registered under different customers | Serial registered once; second registration flagged and reviewed |
| Dealer churn farming | Dealer refers a counter that buys once and vanishes | Pay half on first invoice, half after 90 days of activity |
| Geography mismatch | Referral from Pune, registration in Patna | Distance rule with manual review over a threshold |
| Invoice fabrication | Warranty registered on a fake bill | Invoice match to dealer's billing or scan-in record |
The fraud prevention guide covers the velocity and review-queue rules that apply across all loops.
The economics, worked
The table models a mid-size appliance brand over a year. Figures are illustrative; the ranges reflect programs Unotag runs.
| Loop | Referrals verified | Cost per verified referral | Program cost | Value per conversion | Return |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dealer refers dealer | 120 new counters activated | ₹6,000 plus ₹4,000 welcome scheme | ₹12 L | Average first-year billing ₹8 L per counter | ₹9.6 Cr new billing |
| Installer refers customer | 18,000 registrations | ₹300 to installer plus ₹150 service credit | ₹81 L | Average unit ₹18,000 | ₹32.4 Cr attributed sales |
| Customer refers customer | 6,000 registrations | ₹500 to referrer plus ₹300 to referred | ₹48 L | Average unit ₹18,000 | ₹10.8 Cr attributed sales |
| Total | ₹1.41 Cr | Attributed revenue well above 20 times program cost |
Attributed is not incremental. Some referred customers would have bought anyway; a control group of registrations without a referral code, compared on repeat purchase and warranty claim rates, is the honest measure. The ROI calculation guide covers the method, and the ROI calculator models it.
Which loop to launch first
Start with the loop whose verified action you already record. For most appliance brands that is warranty registration, which makes the installer loop the natural first step: the technician is already enrolled in an installer program, the registration QR already exists, and attaching the installer's code to it is a configuration change rather than a new flow. The customer loop follows once registrations carry a phone number the brand can message; the share link goes out in the registration confirmation on WhatsApp, and the first referrals arrive without a campaign. The dealer loop is last, because activating a new counter takes a field visit and a stock decision, and the referral bonus only makes sense once the brand has a welcome scheme ready for the referred counter.
Communicating the program
Referral programs are killed by silence more than by fraud. Each party needs to hear three things: that the code exists, that a referral has been attributed, and that the reward has been paid. Send the code at enrolment and again in every statement. Send an attribution message the moment the referred party's registration lands, naming the product but not the customer. Pay by UPI the same week and say so. A technician who sees ₹300 arrive four days after recommending a purifier tells the next five customers; one who hears nothing for a quarter assumes the program was a leaflet. The communication plan guide covers template cadence, and the UPI payouts guide covers instant settlement.
Where referrals sit in the wider program
A referral loop is a mechanic, not a program. It works when it sits inside a warranty registration flow that customers already complete, an installer program that technicians already earn from, and a dealer program that counters already belong to. The consumer loyalty and warranty programs post shows the customer side; the digital warranty management page shows the registration flow the referral rides on.
Key takeaways
- Three loops: dealer refers dealer, installer refers customer, customer refers customer. The installer loop is the one specific to electronics.
- Carry the code on WhatsApp or on the warranty QR; attribute on first valid code within a 30 to 60 day window.
- Pay a little on registration and the balance on a verified warranty registration or invoice; split dealer referral bonuses across 90 days.
- Control self-referral with KYC, one-phone-one-earn, serial-registered-once and geography rules; measure incremental, not attributed.
Frequently asked questions
What is an electronics referral program?
A program in which an electronics or appliance brand rewards dealers, installers or customers for bringing a verified new relationship: a new counter that invoices, or a customer whose serial number is registered under warranty within an attribution window. Codes travel by WhatsApp or the warranty QR.
How does an installer referral program work for appliances?
The technician who installs an AC, purifier, geyser or CCTV unit shares a personal code or scans the warranty QR first. When the customer registers the serial number under warranty, the installer earns ₹100 to ₹500 by product value and the customer gets a service benefit.
How much should an electronics brand pay per referral?
Across programs Unotag runs: ₹100 to ₹500 per verified customer referral by product value, ₹200 to ₹1,000 for customer-to-customer referrals including the referred party's benefit, and ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 per dealer referral paid in two halves over 90 days.
Should referral rewards be paid on registration or on purchase?
Split them. Pay a small amount on a verified registration of interest and the balance when the referred serial number is registered under warranty against a dealer invoice. For dealer referrals, pay on first invoice and again after 90 days of activity.
How do you stop fraud in a referral program?
KYC per member, one referred phone earns once, each serial number registered once, geography rules between referrer and registration, invoice matching to dealer billing, and a review queue for anything over threshold.
Can a referral program run on WhatsApp without an app?
Yes. Codes and share links are issued in the member's WhatsApp chat, the referred customer registers warranty by scanning the QR or replying in chat, and rewards are paid by UPI, all in ten Indian languages.
How do you measure whether referrals are incremental?
Compare referred customers with a control group of registrations that carried no code on repeat purchase, accessory attach and warranty claim rates. Attributed revenue overstates the effect; the control group gives the honest number.
