How to create a plumbing incentive program

In plumbing, the plumber decides the brand of pipe and fitting on most residential jobs, the retailer decides what is on the shelf when he walks in, and the dealer decides how deep the range runs in a town. An incentive program has to reach all three without paying twice for the same sale.

To create a plumbing incentive program, reward plumbers for every pipe length, fitting pack, tank or tap they install through a unique QR code scanned on WhatsApp or an app, set rewards that favour fittings and push products rather than flat per-rupee rates, and pay instantly by UPI in the plumber's language. Run retailer and dealer schemes alongside on invoices and bill photos, with range and mix schemes that pull fittings along with pipes.

Step 1: Map the plumbing purchase

A typical residential job runs like this: the plumber visits the site, lists what is needed, and either buys it himself from a nearby counter or tells the house owner what to buy. Brand choice on pipes and fittings is usually his. On tanks and taps the owner has more say, but the plumber's suggestion still counts. On projects, the plumbing contractor and the builder's purchase team decide. Write down who chooses what for each of your product families before designing rewards.

Step 2: Code pipes and small fittings

Plumbing has a practical coding problem: a pipe length is easy to label, a 20 mm elbow is not. Most brands code pipes per length, fittings per pack or bag, tanks per piece and taps per box. The code should bind to the first plumber who scans it and block repeat scans, which matters because loose coupons in fitting bags are often collected by shop staff or claimed twice. Agree the coding unit with the packing line early; it decides your costs and what a plumber has to do at site.

Step 3: Set rewards that lift fittings mix

Fittings usually carry better margin than pipes, yet many plumbers use your pipe with another brand's fittings. A flat reward per rupee does nothing about this. Instead, set a modest per-length reward on pipes and a higher reward on fitting packs, and add a bonus when a plumber scans both pipes and fittings in the same week.

A plumber reward card (illustrative)
₹8per 3 m CPVC pipe length
₹12per fitting pack
₹50per water tank installed
₹10per tap or mixer box
+₹100pipe and fittings in the same week
Tierson yearly scans, higher rate at gold

Taps and tanks need a word of caution. The house owner often pays and may be shown the product by the retailer, so a plumber reward on these lines should be modest and paired with a retailer display or slab scheme. Otherwise you pay the plumber for a decision someone else made.

Step 4: Choose how and when to pay

Plumbers prefer cash to points for routine work, and they work many small jobs. Pay each valid scan by UPI within minutes. Keep a catalogue for larger milestones, such as a pipe-cutting tool or a gift card at a yearly threshold. Our guide to plumber loyalty programs in India discusses cash versus catalogue in more detail.

Step 5: Design retailer and dealer schemes

Plumbing retailers buy small quantities often, so monthly slabs need to be reachable. Range schemes, which reward stocking a minimum number of fitting SKUs, help because a plumber who finds every fitting he needs in one place comes back. Dealers serve both counters and projects, so their schemes usually combine quantity or value slabs, product-family mix, growth over last year and collection rewards. See types of retailer schemes in plumbing for the common formats.

Step 6: Languages, support and tax

Plumbers in different states speak different languages, and many prefer voice. Plan welcome messages, reward explanations and support in the main languages of your markets. Rewards to plumbers and channel partners may attract TDS under section 194R and GST considerations; confirm the treatment with your tax advisor.

Step 7: Pilot before rollout

Choose one region with a few dealers, a few dozen retailers and a few hundred plumbers. Run for one construction season, or at least 60 to 90 days. Measure active plumbers, fitting scans per plumber, retailer participation and cost per unit. Fix packing-line issues and tune the reward card before going wider.

Worked example: one plumber, one bathroom (illustrative)

A plumber fits a bathroom using six CPVC lengths, two fitting packs, one tap box and solvent cement. Using the card above he earns ₹48 on pipes, ₹24 on fittings and ₹10 on the tap, plus the ₹100 same-week bonus because he scanned pipes and fittings together: ₹182 in all, paid by UPI before he leaves the site. Without the bonus he might have bought fittings from another brand at the counter. With it, the brand has a reason for him to ask for its fittings by name.

How Unotag supports plumbing brands

Unotag provides per-unit QR codes for pipes, fitting packs, tanks and taps, scanned on WhatsApp or app with first-scan binding and duplicate blocking, instant UPI payouts, a catalogue of 10,000+ products, tiers and meets, and voice support in Indian languages. Retailer and dealer schemes are calculated on the same platform from ERP invoices or bill photos. See the plumbing industry page and the influencer loyalty program.

Key takeaways

  • Map who chooses each product family before setting rewards.
  • Code pipes per length, fittings per pack and tanks per piece, with first-scan binding.
  • Reward fittings more than pipes and add a bonus for scanning both together.
  • Pay plumbers by UPI within minutes and keep the catalogue for milestones.
  • Pilot for a full construction season before national rollout.

Frequently asked questions

What is a plumbing incentive program?

It is a set of rewards a pipe, fitting, tank or tap brand gives to plumbers, retailers and dealers for choosing, stocking and selling its products, tracked by QR codes on products and by invoices in the channel.

How do you put QR codes on small fittings?

Most brands code fittings per pack or bag rather than per piece, and code pipes per length and tanks per piece.

How can a plumbing brand sell more fittings with its pipes?

Reward fittings at a higher rate than pipes, give plumbers a bonus for scanning both in the same week, and run range schemes for retailers.

Do plumbers prefer cash or gifts?

Most prefer instant cash by UPI for routine jobs. Gifts and catalogue items work for yearly milestones and tiers.

How long should a plumbing program pilot run?

Ideally one full construction season, and at least 60 to 90 days, so you see repeat behaviour and not just launch interest.

Is TDS applicable on plumber rewards?

It may be under section 194R depending on how the rewards are structured. Confirm with your tax advisor.
